Valerie Stahl von Stromberg has been working mainly with photography and installation. The artist is interested in codes and identities, or codes for identities, and the recognition of signs and their inherent ambiguities. Stahl photographs the social and the individual, the public and the private, and their inevitable intertwinement, thus alluring the viewer towards always already flawed attempts to totally recognize, identify and encompass signs, codes, roles and rituals. The artist’s images lead the viewer into a process of endless questioning. Who are these people? What are they doing? Why do they behave this way? What do these objects stand for?
Somewhere between reality and fiction, certainty vanishes and possibilities emerge.
