March 2003
Gustav Metzger
The central purpose of this exhibition is to introduce an “aggressive, politicised aura into London's art world”, and if anyone has the authority to initiate such a task it's the highly respected Metzger. An illusive enthusiast, you will rarely encounter a living artist who has influenced so many in such a variety of disciplines. Best known for his art strike between 1977-80, Metzger will encourage his audience to create an archive of images and cuttings from newspapers and magazines into sections like genetically-modified foods, biotechnology, extinction and information overload. This combined with a forklift truck and decaying metal shelves sunk deep into the earth will hopefully result in a truly landmark event.
